After Earth (2013)
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
I know that After Earth isn’t getting much attention anymore, but I watched it the other day and remembered just how horrible this movie was. I decided that I HAD to remind the world just how awful this movie was.
After Earth is a movie that takes place in the distant future. Earth was uninhabitable so all of the humans had to evacuate to a new planet. But on the new planet, there are aliens who want to kill humans and they can smell people’s fears. Some humans have developed a method of hiding their fear called “Ghosting” these super soldiers are called “Rangers”. The head of the rangers Cypher Raige (Will Smith) has a son named Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith). Cypher decides to take his son Katai on a little trip to another planet. But their ship hits an asteroid field causing them to crash-land on Earth. The problem is… the ship on which they were traveling was carrying one of those fear-smelling aliens, and every living thing on Earth has evolved to kill Katai and his dad. Sounds like it would be a cool movie huh? Guess again!
First disappointment of this movie… M. Night Shyamalan. M. Night Shyamalan is supposed to be a good director, he directed movies like “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable”, but now he’s gone and given us a pile of garbage that is “After Earth”. Why M. Night Shyamalan? Why?
Second disappointment of the movie… The Acting. Will Smith’s acting is horrible, and so is his son’s acting. I know Will is supposed to portray an emotionless jerk, but he could at least have tried to make it look like he wasn’t some human robot.
My third complaint for this movie is that the CGI for this movie was awful. This is the perfect example of a movie that uses CGI not as a tool, but as something that they think will make a movie better, well… it doesn’t.
My final complaint for the movie (although there are many more to be discussed) is the ending of this movie. Throughout the entire movie, your hoping that Will Smith’s character is going to stop acting like a jerk towards his son… but he doesn’t. At the very end of the movie Will Smith is in like a hospital bed and he see’s his son (who saves his life by the way) and Will solutes his son, no hug, just a solute. Then Jaden Smith goes over to hug his father, but it’s like a pathetic forced moment.
At the end of the day, this was a terrible movie which I will probably forget about in a week, or maybe i’ll remember it forever because it was so terrible. My rating for this movie is:
