The Martian (2015)
Director: Ridley Scott
I thought I should do a review for the martian because of it’s recent nomination for the Oscars. This movie is one of my favorites of 2015. With Ridley Scott as the director, we were all guaranteed an extremely enjoyable movie experience.
Before I begin the review, let me just give a tribute to Ridley Scott, I personally enjoy almost all of his movies from The Martian to Aliens (but not Exodus: Gods and kings cough cough).
The Martian… In 2035, the crew of the Ares III manned mission to Mars is exploring the Acidalia Planitia on Martian solar day (sol) 18 of their 31-sol expedition. When the crew receives an alert to leave the planet immediately, they are caught in a storm trying to reach their rocket. All of the crew makes it to the ship… except for Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon). This is where our movie begins.
While the cinematography and soundtrack for this movie were spectacular, the attention needs to be focused on Matt Damon. This entire movie depends on Matt’s performance, there are some supporting characters back on earth and in space, but most of this movie takes place on Mars with Mark Watney. As usual Matt Damon’s acting was fantastic. Not only was he great at giving depth to the movie, but he brought comedy to the movie. Here’s Mark Watney in unbearable conditions and he is still able to put things in a positive perspective.
Almost everything about this movie was perfect and it is very hard for me to complain about it. But if i were to chose something that disappointed me a little would be one part about halfway through the movie where they focus a little too much on Earth. Usually we see mostly what is happening to Mark Watney on Mars, but every now and then they would switch to show the scientists back on Earth trying to save Mark Watney, but in this part of the movie there was almost 20-30 minutes of Earth . I know that most people wouldn’t complain about this and they were most likely running out of material to show on Mars, but it seemed to me that the best scenes of the movie were with Mark Watney on Mars. My other complaint is that, Sean Bean is in the movie… and he doesn’t die.
At the end of the day, I really enjoyed this movie and i hope to see more like this from Ridley Scott. My rating for this movie is:
